1981 Leyland Mini Van

1981 Leyland Mini Van

Sold for £9,152

Restored some years ago to its original Brooklands Green and more recently treated to a full body and mechanical overhaul, this Mini Van represents one of Britain’s most recognisable automotive icons.

The Issigonis-designed Mini, with its transverse engine and front-wheel-drive layout, famously devoted around 80% of its floorpan to passenger space, a packaging miracle that still impresses today.

Built at Longbridge and Cowley, the Mini evolved through the Mk II, Clubman and Mk III, spawning numerous derivatives along the way, including estates, pick-ups and vans.

Early examples carried Austin Seven or Morris Mini Minor badges until 1969, when Mini became a standalone marque.

By 1978 the commercial versions had been renamed Mini 95, reflecting their 0.95-ton gross weight, and an optional L pack arrived in 1979, bringing houndstooth seat inserts, carpeting, a passenger sun visor and extra sound insulation.

The van offered here was purchased by its current owners through Historics in 2020 and is an especially appealing example. Unlike the standard 848cc Mini Van, it uses the larger 998cc engine, and its interior retains the L-pack houndstooth seat centres that pair neatly with the green bodywork.

The restoration carried out by the previous owner was comprehensive: rebuilt engine and gearbox, new brakes and suspension, fresh tyres on refurbished wheels, new exhaust, renewed lighting, restored seats and a full repaint inside and out.

Very few miles have been added since the work was completed. Accompanied by a Heritage Certificate and an original brochure, this is among the finest Mini Vans we’ve encountered. Consigned by Charlie McCreery.
