1964 Austin Mini Cooper MkI 997
A superb example of the rare 997cc Mini Cooper, meticulously restored by a dedicated marque specialist with more than 40 years of experience in Mini restoration.
Introduced in 1961, the Austin Mini Cooper 997 was the very first Cooper-badged Mini, born from the collaboration between BMC and John Cooper. Its unique 997cc long-stroke engine with twin SU carburettors delivered a notable boost in performance over the standard Mini, cementing its place as the foundation of the Cooper legacy.
This genuine 1964 997 Cooper, finished in Old English White with a contrasting black roof and a correct red-and-gold brocade interior, is verified by a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate.
Acquired as a project in 2021, it has since undergone a complete three-year restoration carried out by an experienced Mini restorer to an exceptional standard.

The body was stripped to a bare shell, mounted on a rotisserie, and professionally refinished in period-correct cellulose paint following minimal welding. Both front and rear subframes were removed, rebuilt, and refitted with new or refurbished suspension, steering, and braking components.
The car received a new wiring loom, replacement rubber seals, refreshed chrome trim, and a full interior retrim by Newton Commercial to original BMC specification. Mechanically, the engine and gearbox were rebuilt as required, with refurbished SU carburettors, a new exhaust manifold, and a complete exhaust system fitted.
The restoration is thoroughly documented with build photos, extensive invoices from Mini Spares, old tax discs, MOT certificates, and the original ‘buff’ logbook.
Although no records exist prior to its acquisition in 2021, the meticulous documentation of the restoration showcases the restorer’s passion and precision. Presented in immaculate condition, this outstanding example is undoubtedly one of the finest restored 997cc Mini Coopers currently available.
