1976 Reliant Robin with matching trailer

1976 Reliant Robin with matching trailer

Sold for £1600

The Robin began life as a panel van, later converted by the current owner with the addition of rear windows and seating.

A sunroof was installed, along with roof bars repurposed from boat fittings, a vinyl roof, and four three-point seatbelts. The rear door was reworked from a side-hinged layout to a tailgate supported by gas struts, and a rear wiper was added.

At 125,000 miles, the car underwent a comprehensive body-off restoration. During this process, it received a later-model galvanised chassis, a collapsible safety steering column, and a rebushed steering box.

The engine was fully stripped, rebored, and rebuilt, with the valves re-lapped and a complete new gasket set installed. A new exhaust and silencer were fitted.

The gearbox was overhauled, and a new clutch and thrust bearing installed, along with a replacement clutch cable. The braking system was extensively renewed with a new master cylinder and slave cylinders, fresh linings, new pipes and hoses, and new shock absorbers all round.

The sale includes an extensive selection of spares and documentation: workshop manuals, spare door and rear window glass, a front shock absorber, brake drums and shoes, hoses, a gearbox housing, rear light lenses, and numerous small electrical components.

A scissor jack, handle, and wheel brace are also included, along with a 5/8 reamer for front king pin bush reaming.

Also included is a custom-built trailer made from two Robin body halves mounted on a bespoke box-section frame, complete with a tailgate on gas struts.

It features Indespension braked units and an 8 cwt braked tow hitch, modified by removing the return spring to suit the lighter trailer weight (at the time, this was the smallest braked hitch available). The trailer offers approximately 5 feet of flat load space.

The vehicle is registered as a Historic Vehicle, making it exempt from MOT testing and qualifying for zero-rate historic road tax.
