LIUX BIG

Spanish startup LIUX is taking an unconventional approach to sustainable mobility with its new electric microcar, the BIG.

Instead of focusing solely on electrification, the company believes reducing weight and using eco-friendly materials are just as important for lowering a vehicle’s environmental impact.

Founded in 2021, LIUX developed the two-seat city car with a body made primarily from flax-fibre composite. The material, produced from the same plant used to make linen, is significantly lighter than steel while naturally absorbing CO₂ during cultivation.

Engineered for city life. Designed for radical efficiency

Combined with a bio-based recyclable resin, it allows many of the car’s body panels to be recycled at the end of their life.

Weighing less than 600 kg, the BIG features a lightweight upper body structure of just 45 kg. According to LIUX, its bio-based construction cuts CO₂ emissions by 61% compared to a conventional steel body and reduces the vehicle’s overall carbon footprint by around 40% versus a typical electric car. Its length is just 2.7 meters.

The interior also emphasizes sustainability, using recycled plastics and recycled upholstery materials. The modular battery pack can be removed, replaced, or upgraded as battery technology evolves, extending the vehicle’s lifespan instead of encouraging replacement.

Priced below €18,000, the BIG is classified as an L7e heavy quadricycle rather than a conventional passenger car. As a result, its top speed is electronically limited to 90 km/h, and it complies with a different set of safety regulations than standard automobiles.

It can go up to 270 km with only 7 kWh/100km consumption and charge 20–80% in under 4,5 hours with a standard home plug.

Although LIUX still faces the challenge of scaling production in an increasingly competitive European market, the BIG demonstrates that sustainable vehicle design goes beyond electric powertrains. By combining lightweight engineering, renewable materials, and recyclable construction, the Spanish startup offers a fresh vision for the future of urban mobility.
