2020 Smart EQ ForTwo & EQ ForFour
Smart will present the updated ForTwo and ForFour. The restyled Smart EQ Fortwo and EQ Forfour for the first time have different front end design. The update Smarts will celebrate the premiere in Frankfurt on September 10th. In this form, it should survive until 2022, until a brand-new generation is released in China.
The only electric motor as before produces 60 kW (82 hp, 160 N•m). It takes 11.6-12.7 s to get to 62 mph (100 km/h) and 4.8-5.2 s to 37 mph (60 km/h). The maximum speed is 80 mph (130 km/h). The battery capacity has not changed (17.6 kWh), so the power reserve has remained the same – 87-100 miles (140–159 km) in the outdated NEDC cycle. In general, the technology didn’t become any better, but easy restyling is presented as “a new generation: innovative, digital, urban”.
“The new smart is radically simple. We orchestrated the typical smart identity with the new faces“, explains Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Daimler AG. “In line with the smart DNA, we lower the grille and the headlamps above it and in this way create a sporty, progressive appearance.”
The expanded grille slid down and joined with the refreshed bumper, supplemented by air ducts around the edges. The new LED headlights with three active elements are “inspired” by the Forease and Forease+ show cars. Recycled lights with “rhombic geometry” resemble lights stylized as the British flag on the Mini Cooper SE electric car. Smart Forfour received an “inverted”, expanding downward grille with foglights attached to it. The Vision EQ Fortwo concept was similar.
Inside, Smart draws attention to the “brand new” center console. Before, there were cup holders in front of the lever, and drawers for small things were put forward on the sides. Now there is just a niche covered by a roller blind.
“Even the largest smartphones can now be stowed securely here. Alternatively, the new stowage compartment can also accommodate two coffee cups thanks to its removable dual cup holder.”
With this update, Daimler relies only on European consumers, since Smart will leave America by the end of the year. Then a joint venture with Geely will be created, which will take the brand under its control, build a factory for it in China and prepare the next generation of models.
