Daihatsu Hijet Dumbo

The 1989 Dumbo was a boxy concept van derived from the production HiJet microvan, yet despite sharing its brick-like proportions, it was anything but conventional or discreet in appearance.

This compact concept made its public debut at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show and was developed to comply with kei-car regulations, which is why it was closely based on the standard Hijet and retained its 660 cc engine.

At the heart of the Hijet Dumbo was an unusual dual-purpose idea. It was envisioned as a mobile space for a traditional tea ceremony, featuring a completely flat floor and curtains to help set the appropriate atmosphere, while still being practical enough to function as a small but capable work vehicle when needed.
