Smart Concept #2

Smart is going back to its roots with a successor to the iconic Smart Fortwo. Revealed at the “Change of Perspectives” event in Beijing, the Smart Concept #2 offers a near-production preview of a tiny urban EV set to launch in 2026.

Designed by Mercedes-Benz, the concept looks like a natural evolution of the discontinued Smart EQ Fortwo. It retains the familiar two-door layout, ultra-short front overhang, and wheels pushed to the corners, while adding sharper LED lighting and cleaner, more modern surfacing.

The concept also features several eye-catching details that may not reach production, including transparent aero wheel covers, illuminated “#2” graphics, leather strap door handles, a suitcase-inspired closed grille, and a rear matrix display capable of showing messages. A gold-finished floating roof further enhances its futuristic look.

At 2,792 mm long, the Concept #2 is the largest two-door Smart ever, measuring 292 mm longer than the original Fortwo and 97 mm longer than the last EQ Fortwo. Despite this, it remains extremely compact—significantly shorter than EVs like the Fiat 500e and Renault Twingo E-Tech, and closer in size to quadricycles such as the Citroën Ami.

Underneath, it rides on a new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), developed in-house with input from Geely. Like other smaller Smart models (#1 and #3), the #2 will be fully electric.

While full specifications haven’t been announced, Smart is targeting a range of around 300 km (186 miles), more than double that of the EQ Fortwo. Fast charging from 10 to 80% is expected to take under 20 minutes, and the car will support V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) functionality. It will likely retain the rear-wheel-drive layout of its predecessors.

Interior details remain under wraps, but the dedicated EV platform should allow for a more spacious and premium-feeling two-seat cabin.

The production version of the Smart #2 is set to debut at the Paris Motor Show in October, ahead of its market launch, with a primary focus on Europe and the UK, and potential availability in other global markets.
