The original Mini hardly needs an introduction. Launched in 1959 as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini Minor, it enjoyed a remarkably long and successful production run, eventually bowing out as the Rover Mini in 2000.

For decades it has served as both a beloved first classic for newcomers and a cult favorite among enthusiasts. Some owners modify their Minis for extra performance, style, or personal flair, while others champion originality above all else. Whatever the approach, the Mini is a guaranteed source of joy.

We are pleased to present this 1976 Leyland Mini 1000 Special, widely known as the “Stripey,” finished in Brooklands Green with its signature orange-striped interior. Although later synonymous with special editions, the Mini did not receive its first UK-market limited-run version until late 1975.

That model was the Mini 1000 Special, instantly recognizable thanks to its distinctive orange MGB-pattern fabric upholstery. Offered only in Glacier White or Brooklands Green — the latter seen here — it was also the first round-nose Mini to feature eyeball air vents, twin chrome door mirrors, and reclining front seats. Production was limited to 3,000 units, and none were officially exported when new.

After spending many years off the road, this example has undergone an extensive restoration carried out by the current owner. The work included new floors and a full glass-out repaint in the correct Brooklands Green. It previously gained a vinyl roof with a Webasto-style opening, which has sensibly been retained.

Apart from that and a set of slightly earlier chrome wheel trims, the rebuild remains faithful to factory specification. A charming detail is the retention of the original raised-digit number plates, freshly refurbished rather than replaced. Inside, the car has been re-trimmed in the proper striped fabric and fitted with new carpets, giving the cabin a wonderfully authentic 1970s feel.

As most work was completed by the owner’s own business, invoices are not available. The car is accompanied by the V5C, some spare parts, restoration photographs, and the original carpets.

This delightful Mini marks an important milestone in the model’s history — the beginning of the limited-edition era that would later become such a hallmark of the brand. Stripey examples seldom come to market; this is only the second we’ve encountered in recent years. As the original advertisement proudly declared: “If ever a car has earned its stripes, it’s the Mini.”
