1999 Rover Mini Cooper 40

1999 Rover Mini Cooper 40

Many enthusiasts will recognize the Rover Mini 40 — the limited-edition model created to celebrate an incredible 40 years of continuous Mini production. Launched in 1999 near the end of the model’s lifespan, just 250 UK-market examples were produced, offered exclusively in Mulberry Red, Island Blue, or Old English White.

All featured the wide-arch Sport Pack and 13-inch wheels. Japan received its own batch of 150 Mini 40s in the same colors, but without the Sport Pack.

Yet the anniversary festivities didn’t end there: later in 1999, the Japanese market received an additional special edition — the Mini Cooper 40.

Offered only in Solar Red and Brooklands Green, and equipped like the UK cars with the Sport Pack and larger wheels, this version is believed by the Mini 40 Register to have been limited to as few as 100 units. It is identifiable by its round Mini 40 bonnet badge paired with Cooper laurels on the sides rather than the standard “40” decals.

We are pleased to present this 1999 Mini Cooper 40, finished in Brooklands Green with a black leather interior. Originally delivered to Japan, it was imported into the UK in 2020 and has had only one UK owner since.

Japanese-market examples could be ordered with an automatic transmission, and this one is so equipped — making it especially easy and enjoyable to drive. Air-conditioning was also standard for Japan, a feature rarely seen on a 1990s Mini and one that adds welcome comfort.

A green Mini with a contrasting roof feels quintessentially British, and paired with the flared Sport Pack arches and Minilite-style alloys, it creates a wonderfully purposeful stance. Retro-style chrome mirrors have been added, enhancing the car’s classic character.

The paint and brightwork present very well, making this a car to proudly show anywhere. Inside, the condition is equally impressive: the black leather seats show minimal wear, which aligns with the low mileage — just 27,000 over 36 years.

All the correct 40th Anniversary touches are present, including the leather-rimmed steering wheel, special ivory dials with 40th branding, turned-metal-look dashboard with leather top, and a clean, tight headliner.

Documentation includes the V5C, past and current MOT certificates, a few invoices (including a new steering rack and renewed ball joints in April 2024), and two keys.

Rover produced many memorable special-edition Minis, but the 40th Anniversary models — along with the final Sport 500 — are among the most sought-after today. This Japanese-market Cooper 40 is not only rare and collectible; thanks to its automatic transmission and air-conditioning, it is unusually practical as well. With low mileage and excellent condition, it represents a standout opportunity for any Mini enthusiast.
