Amphicat

At the 1971 Barcelona Auto Show, the “Gato Montes”, a 6-wheel drive ATV designed by Artes de Arcos, was presented to society. The starting price was 110,000 pts and it had optional elements such as a closed fiberglass cabin or a trailer to transport it. It is estimated that a total of 200 units were produced in Spain, with transmissions coming from the United States.

Licenses to manufacture it abroad were soon granted. In France it was manufactured by Massey Ferguson and marketed under the name Wild Cat, and in Canada it was manufactured by Borg Warner and marketed under the name Amphicat.

The Amphicat was also manufactured by Mobility Unlimited Inc in Auburn Heights, Michigan. The production line was purchased by Magna American Corp., a division of Magna Corporation, which produced the vehicle in Raymond, Mississippi for several years.

As an anegdetic title it can be mentioned that the Amphicat with some aesthetic modifications was used as a lunar vehicle in the series Espacio 1999 and as an ice cream car in the American television series Banana Splits.

6×6 ATV has a Vacuum-formed Marbon Cycolac ABS plastic body and equipped with a 16 hp (12 kW) air-cooled 2-cycle recoil start gasoline engine. Ontario Drive & Gear Limited (ODG) manufactured a special transmission capable of forward and reverse for the Amphicat.
