Daihatsu FX-228

The 1991 Daihatsu FX-228 Concept debuted as a convertible interpretation of the fourth-generation Daihatsu Cuore at the 29th Tokyo Motor Show.

Conceived as a compact roadster with an unconventional folding roof, the concept attracted enough attention to make the leap from show stand to production.

That production model emerged shortly afterward as the Daihatsu Leeza Spider, built from November 1991 through August 1993 and based on the Leeza three-door hatchback.

While the standard closed-roof Leeza was offered with a range of four different engines, the open-top Spider followed a more focused approach.

It was powered exclusively by a 660 cc turbocharged engine, notable for its relatively high output within kei-car regulations and its distinctive hood-mounted air intake, which visually reinforced its sporty character.
