Hope
Hope Whisper
The Hope Whisper was a Danish prototype electric city car developed in 1983 as an early attempt at clean, urban mobility.
It was powered by a 10 kW electric motor paired with six 6-volt batteries, enabling a top speed of around 60 km/h and a range of roughly 100 km — modest figures, but forward-looking for its time.
To keep weight low, the Whisper used a lightweight fibreglass body. Unfortunately, its debut was overshadowed when one of the prototypes crashed during a launch demonstration, casting doubt over the project’s viability.
Engineers pressed on and introduced an improved variant, the Whisper II, in 1985 with support from Berlin University.
Yet, despite the upgrades, funding for production never came through. With resources exhausted and no commercial backing, the ambitious Hope project came to an end — leaving the Whisper as a fascinating but ultimately unfulfilled vision of electric urban transport.
