After a lifetime spent developing cars for China’s leaders, Mr. Hua Fulin and two other senior FAW researchers and engineers decided to create something completely different: a genuine “people’s car.”

The project was named Sankoule, literally meaning “Three Mouths,” a reference to the standard Chinese family of the time, consisting of two parents and one child.

A prototype was completed in 1991.

The same year, car designer Mr. Dong Ruifeng developed a much more advanced clay model of the project, which was named the Cycler SKL160.
