Honda EVX

The 1993 Honda EVX was Honda’s electric concept car shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1993. It came from a period when Honda was already exploring electric vehicles through earlier prototype research in the 1980s.

Rather than presenting a simple styling exercise, the EVX was part of Honda’s broader effort to understand how electric vehicles could become usable in real life.

The EVX had a distinctly futuristic appearance, with reflective paint and a front-mounted camera intended to improve visibility in difficult conditions. At the same time, the cabin was more practical and straightforward than the exterior suggested.

The EVX was an electric concept which used lead-acid batteries and a 240 V system, with rear-wheel drive and about 40 kW of power.

That puts it firmly in the early phase of Honda’s EV development, before the company moved toward more advanced experimental and production electric models. In that sense, the EVX was less about final performance numbers and more about testing the feasibility of electric vehicle technology.

Honda used the EVX as one step in a longer development path that eventually led to later electric projects such as the EV Plus. Honda’s testing and prototype work in this period helped refine the technologies that would later appear in production-oriented EV efforts. The EVX therefore matters not only as a concept car, but also as an early marker of Honda’s long-term interest in electric propulsion.
