1966 Morris Mini Cooper ‘S’ Rally Replica

1966 Morris Mini Cooper ‘S’ Rally Replica

A road-legal tribute to a rally Mini, this car boasts an extensive specification, a 1,340cc engine, and numerous period-correct details.

Built by Mini specialist Simon Darby of Austin Morris Services on the Isle of Wight, this car was commissioned by its owner as a no-expense-spared replica of a rally Mini.

Widely regarded as one of Darby’s finest creations, the build was completed around 2006 using a Mk1 850 bodyshell that was fully restored with new wings, floor-pan, sills, and more.

Power comes from a MED Engineering rebuilt A+ engine from the 1980s, strengthened and expanded to 1,340cc.

It is paired with a straight-cut “drop gears” gearbox, while all-new brakes and suspension were fitted to match its performance intent. Additional period touches include rare Lucas “Flame-thrower” Works spotlights and a Works-style dashboard.

Attention to detail is exceptional: 130 mph Cooper speedometer, twin fuel tanks, Cooper S badges, grille/boot board, chrome mirrors, front spot and fog lights, leather bonnet strap, 10″ Minilite wheels, bonnet-mounted engine cut-off switch, sump guard, two towing eyes, heated windscreen, wheel arch extensions, mud flaps, Sabelt racing belts, roll cage, rear seat delete, fire extinguisher, pace note reading lights, stopwatches, full bank of racing switches, centre-exit exhaust, and rear spot/reversing light.

While not built as a competition car, this superb homage captures the spirit of the rally Mini and promises plenty of driving enjoyment.

Sold for £22,500 at The Classic Sale at the NEC Classic Motor Show 2025 by Iconic Auctions.
