Smart #2 Pre-production Prototype Undergoes Global Testing in Camouflage
Smart has begun global real-world testing of the all-electric #2, marking a major step toward the model’s production debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026.
Pre-production prototypes are now undergoing validation on public roads and at dedicated test facilities around the world.
Developed jointly by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team and Smart’s Global R&D Team, the two-seat city EV is built on the company’s Electric Compact Architecture (ECA). It features rear-wheel drive and a new-generation tridion safety cell, with engineers currently refining the chassis, structure, and overall driving dynamics.
The validation program includes emergency lane-change tests, wet-weather handling, noise and vibration optimization, curb impacts, and durability trials over rough surfaces. Prototypes are also being evaluated in wind tunnels, acoustic chambers, temperature-controlled test rigs, and on public roads. Earlier this year, the #2 completed winter testing in Northeast China.
While Smart has yet to release production specifications, the original concept featured a 35.7-kWh battery, a WLTP driving range of approximately 300 km, DC fast charging from 10 to 80 percent in around 20 minutes, and an exceptionally tight 6.95-meter turning circle. Company CEO Tong Xiangbei has also previously mentioned a long-term target of up to 400 km on the Chinese CLTC cycle, although final figures have not been confirmed.
Development of the #2 began with heavily modified Smart fortwo-based test vehicles before progressing to today’s fully engineered pre-production prototypes.
The Smart #2 forms part of the company’s broader 2026 expansion strategy, which also includes the launch of the larger Smart #6 and entry into additional international markets.
Meanwhile, Smart’s current lineup posted modest sales in China during June 2026. The Smart #1 remained the brand’s best-selling model with 988 registrations, followed by the Smart #5 (434 units), Smart #6 (198), and Smart #3 (177). The upcoming #2 has not yet entered production and is therefore absent from the sales figures.
